Cornbread from scratch: the southern staple that goes with just about anything! It’s funny that something so tasty could have been popularized out of necessity. In the past, cornbread was often made because wheat flour was so much more expensive.
Even though that is no longer a problem, cornbread continues to grace our dinner tables because everyone loves some good southern style cooking! Everyone including Hershey and Spartacus, my two best buddies pictured below.
A Little bit about the dogs
Even the dogs love it! They will sit in the kitchen the whole time I am cooking, wagging their tails and waiting for crumbs to fall. If you haven’t met our dogs, let me make a brief introduction. The first one is my sweet boy Hershey. A chow chow lab mix, sniffer of everything and official cornbread taster #1.
Then you have the little warrior Spartacus. A Jack Russel terrier, destroyer of chew toys and official cornbread taster #2. He is also from Texas which might have something to do with his love for cornbread. We call him the lone star pup. Our other dog Hershey is from Indiana, he’s the Hoosier Pup.
Onto the Recipe!
Even though I could talk about my dogs endlessly, I’ll get back to the cornbread. It really couldn’t be simpler to make. Once you have the recipe down pat, you’ll be able to make cornbread from scratch anytime!
Just place the cornmeal, flour, salt and baking powder into the bowl of a stand mixer. Begin stirring with the paddle attachment as you gradually add in the milk and melted butter. Continue stirring until all the ingredients are thoroughly combined, about 1-2 minutes.
Baking The Corn Bread
Have your oven preheating while you mix the batter. This recipe really is so quick to make that the oven will probably be ready before you even have the batter in the pan. Use a rubber spatula to scrape the cornbread out of the bowl and into a greased baking dish. Smooth the top and bake it in the oven for 20 minutes.
Enjoy with whatever accompaniment you like, white beans and ham, chili or try out my new recipe for juicy and flavorful barbecue ribs! And there ya go, a perfect recipe to make cornbread from scratch.
